◆「COVID-19の時代」の新しい語義––bubbleを巡って
最近のスポーツニュースや新聞記事などで「バブル方式」という言葉を見聞きした方も多いと思います。
大規模な競技会の準備期間から終了までの間、関係者（選手・コーチ・団体役員など）を、特別に設営した閉鎖区域に隔離して競技会を運営することを、開催地一帯を巨大な泡（バブル）に包まれた密閉空間に見立てて「バブル方式」と呼びます。この「バブル」はもちろん英語のbubbleで、「泡」の意味が転じて「密閉空間–隔離された場所」の意味になることは、『オーレックス英和辞典』のbubble名詞の語義❽に「防御［隔離］された場所；防御［隔離］するもの，覆い」とあるとおりです。この意味用法がスポーツの分野に特化して「バブル方式」なる言葉が生み出されたものと考えられます。
このbubbleは「COVID-19の時代」に生まれた新語義として、英和辞典への掲載を検討する価値がありそうです。そこで典拠資料を探し出すべくオンライン辞典を検索すると、Merriam-Webster(MW)がちゃんと収録していました[＊1]。さすがですね。

語義7c、dがスポーツ競技の「バブル方式」に関する定義になっています。
ところで、オンライン辞典でbubbleの新語義を探し回っているときに面白いことに気づきました。まずは上に挙げたMWの７bをご覧ください。大意は「グループ内では頻繁に親密な交流を続けるが、感染症流行期間中は感染の拡大を防ぐために外部曝露を最小限に抑えてグループ外の人とはほとんど交流を持たない、通例少数の人々（家族・友達・仕事の同僚・級友など）」といったところでしょうか。
これはスポーツ分野の「バブル方式」と同じく、COVID-19感染予防の観点から生まれた新語義に相違ありません。「外部から遮断された空間、隔離された環境」の意味から転じて、そのような環境で共に生活する少数の人々、という意味が生じたのだと思われます。
スポーツ分野の「バブル方式」に相当する語義を採択しているのはMWだけでしたが、感染症予防手段としての「隔離された環境で共に生活する少数の親しい人々」は、他のオンライン辞典も揃って新語義として追加しているのです。

The spec. sense arose in 2020 as part of the official recommendations of some governments in response to the Covid-19 pandemic (see Covid-19 n.), defining groups of people allowed to associate without social distancing (social distancing n. 2).

これだけのオンライン辞典が軒並み掲載しているのですから、新語義として英和辞典に追加する条件は十分満たしているといえるでしょう。なお、スポーツの「バブル方式」を採択しているのは今の所MWだけですので、しばらくは様子見、といったところでしょうか。
ということで、とりあえずスポーツの「バブル方式」のように「バブル」という語に新しい意味を付加する方向で新語義の記述を考えてみました。

なお、米系のMWとDictionary.comは揃ってbubbleの同義語としてpodを挙げています。OED以下の英系の辞典がbubbleの語義説明でpodに言及していないことを考え合わせますと、podをbubbleの同義語として用いるのは（今のところ）米国用法である可能性が高いと判断できます。
以上を踏まえて、podにも次のように新語義を追加しておきます。

以下、まったくの余談です。
2020年に生まれたばかりのこの語義を見知った私が真っ先に思い浮かべた絵画があります。初期フランドル派を代表する画家ヒエロニムス・ボス（1450？-1516）の傑作『快楽の園』（マドリード、プラド美術館蔵）です。
この名高い三連式祭壇画の中央パネル左やや下方に描かれた、池水の上に浮かぶ透明な球体の中で仲睦まじげに体を寄せ合う男女の姿は、まさにbubbleの新語義のイメージそのものではありませんか。
もちろんbubbleの新語義が意味するのは「ごく親しい関係にある限られた人々の集まり」であり、彼らbubbleが生きているのはあくまでも「仮想的に」閉ざされた空間です。そんな彼らの形姿を、500年の時空を越えて、架空のbubbleに優しく包まれた安全な場所で親しげに寄り添う二人＝bubbleとしてかくも鮮やかに形象化した幻視の巨人ヒエロニムス・ボス！ もし私が「英語絵解き辞典」のような本を編集するとしたら、bubbleの新語義の定義には何を置いてもこの画像を使うことでしょう。
閑話休題。このたび「COVID-19の時代」が生んだ新しい英語表現を次々に取り上げ、その成り立ちや使われ方を調べているうちに見えてきたものがありました。それは、世界大戦にも比すべき苦境に直面しながらも、「かばん語」などの言葉遊びをさまざまに駆使して、状況そのものを少しでも耐え忍びやすいものに変えて乗り切ろうとする、英語圏の人々の静かな英知と勇気でした。
これら新しく生み出された言葉たちは、人と人の物理的な距離が否応なく遠ざけられているこの時代にあって、言葉が人の思考や行動に大きな力を及ぼしうるという事実に改めて注意を向ける人が増えていることの現れとも感じられました。
願わくばコロナ禍が一日も早く終息し、今回紹介した新語・新語義がobsolete words （廃用表現）となって古文書収納庫の奥深くに仕舞い込まれ、人々の脳裏から消え去る日が訪れることを祈りつつ、今回の「ちょっと長めのつぶやき」を終わります。
